Female Native artists finally get their time in the spotlight
It is 2019, and it is only now that we are witnessing the first art exhibition dedicated to Native American and Canadian female artists. Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists is being shown at the Minneapolis Institute of Art until August 18th. It will display art by over 115 artists, ranging from contemporary to ancient. Happy birthday Hello Kitty!
Hello Kitty turned 45 this year! In honour of her birthday, the Corey Helford gallery in LA has invited artists to contribute art work inspired by and dedicated to this beloved cat. You can take a look at some of the bizarre and unusual art here.
What happened to the art depicting female priests?
As most of you know, women are not allowed to be priests in the Catholic Church. Art historian Ally Kateusz recently presented a paper in Rome where she looked at early Christian artwork that depicts women as priests and bishops. Kateusz work raises the question of why these depictions of female priests were hidden away. You can read the full article here.
Banksy, is that you?
ITV recently unearthed a forgotten interview from way back in 2003. In the video, a man claiming to be Banksy can be seen talking to reporter Haig Gordon, albeit with the lower half of his face covered. The footage also shows him creating some of his famous early works. Banksy has been known for staying anonymous by going as far as to let other people pretend to be him. So whether or not this newly (re)discovered video features the real Banksy is still a mystery. You can watch it here.
Masterpieces from the moon
As we discussed in an earlier post, the moon landing from 50 years ago inspired quite a lot of art. Jonathan Jones looks at how the original photos taken by Armstrong and Aldrin are artistic masterpieces all on their own. Take a look at the truly iconic images here.
